Burnie Dogs

Dogs at our Burnie Home

The dogs below are waiting for adoption from our Burnie Home. If youโ€™re interested in adopting one of these dogs, please click the link below to make an appointment to visit the Home. Please be aware that dogs are being adopted throughout the day, and while we try and update Facebook and the website as soon as a dog is adopted, we cannot guarantee that any particular dog will still be there when you visit.

We only take visitors by appointment. This helps us to limit the number of people in the adoption area, reducing stress on the dogs. Bookings can only be made on the day and for two days ahead.ย

What a pretty Missy we have here with her winning smile.

She’s a Mastiff-Pitbull x who weighs 30.4kg and is about one year old. We are told she knows sit, shake, comes when called and is toilet trained. She’s eager to please so may take well to further training.

“Missy can be a nervous girl initially with new people,” staff at our Burnie Home tell us. “She loves other dogs and walks super well on a lead.” Missy might like a canine buddy in her new home.

She also loves toys, especially plush toys and balls, and enjoys going to the beach. She lived with children of all ages in her past life. She’s lived happily with cats before, but we can’t guarantee she’d be okay with them in her new home.

Boof looks a little sad — maybe because he’s been saddled with a less-than-glamorous name that doesn’t meet up with his dashing good looks.

Boof came to us as a stray, so we don’t know much about him or where he is with his training. He’s a Pointer-Foxhound x who weighs a little more than 18kg and will be five years old in April.

We have learned he apparently lived with other dogs in a past life but can also be a bit selective about his friends. Having said that, he went on a nice walk yesterday with fellow Burnie guest Flossy. “Boof prefers his own space but enjoyed a walk with volunteers,” staff told us.

Boof would benefit from ongoing socialisation with other dogs to help him become a polite member of canine social circles.

Cocoa butter is an essential ingredient in chocolate. Our Coco is looking to be the essential ingredient in someone’s life (or lives).

She’s a Staffy-Blue Heeler x who is almost two years old and weighs 20.5kg. We’re told she knows sit, lie down, “toilet”, “look away”, comes when called, and is toilet trained.

“She can be a little bit timid when meeting new people but soon warms up and does zoomies,” say staff at our Burnie Home. See her in zoomie mode in our video in the comments.

Coco has led a bit of a sheltered existence and has had limited interaction with people and other dogs. She’ll need ongoing socialisation with us (humans) and them (dogs). Gentle introductions to everything in the wider world will also be vital for her.

Look closely: Rufus is sporting a very impressive moustache that would give Tom Selleck a run for his money.

Rufus was a stray so we can only speculate about his breeding. He’s believed to be a Foxhound about 18 months old. He weighs about 29kg. We don’t know where he is with his obedience or toilet training.

Staff at our Burnie Home say he’s a “typical hound who likes to do his own thing”. He has been in a yard with another Burnie dog and is happy to play or chill out, so he might like an equally chillaxed canine friend in his new home.

Rufus — the doofus — can be a little strong on a lead. At his age he is still a very good candidate for obedience training. Treat-based training can be a powerful motivator for dogs, along with plenty of praise to make them feel like the most special dog in the world.

๐Ÿ”Š Teddy is moving to another Home so watch this space! ๐Ÿ‘

We now have two Teddys and a Bear in our care, which means we’re almost all set for Play School. More news on that front soon.

Friendly young Teddy is a Border Collie-Kelpie x who is four months old and weighs about 13kg, with some filling out to do yet, of course. He hasn’t had any toilet or obedience training apart from sit and come, but he’s an eager-to-please pup who still has plenty of time to master such things.

We don’t have a great deal of information about Teddy. We do know he has lived with dogs and cats in the past but we can’t say how he would be around cats in his new home.

“He’s a cute little pup but does have a habit of jumping up right now, so we would not recommend a home with young children,” staff at our Burnie Home say. Some reward-based training should help get Teddy’s feet on the ground.

He would benefit from plenty of socialisation with people and other dogs as he learns to master his manners and grow up to be a polite young man. As a mix of two clever, active working breeds, he will need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation for a healthy body and satisfied mind.

There’s little doubt of what was on someone’s mind when it came to naming this famous five. We have given their names clockwise from the top left in our graphic.

Freckles, Bounty, Snickers, Crumble and Waffle are male American Staffy-Mastiff-Rottweiler x pups born on February 18. They’re baby sized now but, considering their breeding, they have plenty of growing to do.

Like all puppies, positive training and socialisation experiences with people and other dogs at this early age will set them on a great path to becoming well-behaved and well-adjusted adults. Puppy preschool helps knock both those goals out of the park, and is a great way to bond with your new family member too.

Remember our five male “chocolate bar pups” in Burnie? We have their sisters here as well.

Polly and Violet (whose names blend with brothers Waffle and Crumble) are American Staffy-Mastiff-Rottweiler x pups born on February 18.

These girls will also need gentle introductions to all the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures the world has to offer.
