Launceston Dogs

Dogs at our Launceston Home

The dogs below are waiting for adoption from our Launceston Home. If youโ€™re interested in adopting one of these dogs, please click the link below to make an appointment to visit the Home.ย

Please be aware that dogs are being adopted throughout the day, and while we try and update Facebook and the website as soon as a dog is adopted, we cannot guarantee that any particular dog will still be there when you visit.

We only take visitors by appointment. This helps us to limit the number of people in the adoption area, reducing stress on the dogs. Bookings can only be made on the day and for two days ahead.ย

Handsome Parker is quite the mysterious guy – we have next to no info on him. We can’t even ask him if he has Spidey senses like Peter Parker.

We do know he’s a Hound x who is one year old and weighs 22kg, but that’s it. We don’t know where he is with his obedience or toilet training, but we have noted he likes to keep his pen clean. When it comes to training, he does have the advantage of youth and enthusiasm on his side. See more pix of him in the comments.

“Parker does sit nicely when asked,” staff at our Burnie Home said. Parker was at Burnie before moving to Launceston. “He needs a bit of lead training. He is playful with other dogs.”

Well, that’s a bit of good news at least! Parker might like a canine friend in his new home. Other than that, we can only paraphrase the words of Homer (Simpson, not the Greek poet): “Spider dog, spider dog, does whatever a spider dog does …”

Bernie’s backstory may be a bit elusive, but one thing is for sure — he's all about playtime and canine camaraderie.

This loveable hound, who came to us as a stray, is searching for a home where he can have furry friends to frolic with, as being surrounded by his doggy pals seems to bring him joy. As of March 2024 he is 18 months old and weighs 37kg.

He knows how to sit and stay but still has a lot to learn, so he will need someone who is willing to provide him with ongoing obedience training and enrichment. He has a cheeky side and playful, pup-like nature.

“Bernie is one of happiest dogs of all — I don’t think he has bad days, and he is always up for adventures,” says volunteer Maria. “If any dog can brighten an average day, Bernie can. I have only the best wishes only for this big fun fellow!”

Just think: if you adopt Stella, when you call her name you can pretend to be Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Stella is a Kelpie-German Shorthaired Pointer x who weighs a little more than 16kg and will be a year old in May. We are told she knows sit and wait, comes when called, and is toilet trained.

“Stella is a fun-loving, energetic girl who loves to play and learn new tricks,” staff at our Launceston Home say. “She gets along with other dogs but isn't into sharing so she might be best suited to a home where she can be the sole dog, but go on regular playdates with canine friends. She loves to play tug and chase toys around the yard.”

Stella likes going to the beach, dam or river and will have a splash under the garden sprinkler if those options aren’t available. Her high energy levels mean she’s not suited to a home with young children.

Captain is hoping to chart a course into someone’s heart and sail out of our Launceston Home.

He’s a Maremma x who is a year and a half old and weighs 31kg. He has previously been putting his breeding to good use guarding a flock of ducks.

Captain has spent most of this time outside with his ducky friends, so can get a little startled by unfamiliar noises. He doesn’t have any obedience or toilet training but comes when called “when he wants to”, and we're told he keeps his pen nice and clean so maybe he's just a naturally tidy guy.

He can be initially a little reserved with people but once he warms up, he is a friendly, sweet boy who loves to lean into you for a scratch. He’s not suitable for a home with cats or other small animals. Although Captain is an experienced duck guardian, he doesn’t like chickens.

Captain has mostly spent his time down on the farm and will need a family who have plenty of space for him, and the patience to work on his obedience training and show him what life is like in the wider world. He hasn't been around children, so we think a quieter home without children would be best to help him adjust to his new life. We’d prefer he went to people who have experience with the singular breed that is the Maremma.

“It was hard to get a photo of Dorian not looking dopey,” a Launceston staff member noted on his information. Oh well, one is enough!

He’s a Spaniel-Beagle x who weighs 21kg and will be one year old at the end of October. He hasn’t had much in the way of training but sometimes comes when called. We are told he’s not toilet trained. He also needs to get used to walking on a lead.

“Dorian can be shy when meeting new people but warms up quickly,” staff say. “He hasn't had much experience of the world so will need a family who can introduce him to things slowly. He loves other dogs and may like a pal in his new home to help show him the ropes.

“He gets attached to people quickly and likes to climb in your lap for a cuddle and support. He loves food and, being a Spaniel x, he loves to sniff it out. He enjoys food puzzle toys and zooming around the yard.”

Nehemia was a stray so we don't know much about her history, but staff at our Launceston Home say she gives off “Jack Russell energy”. Anyone with experience of Jackies knows that a lot of energy!

She’s some kind of mixed breed cutie who weighs 8.5kg. We think she’s about 14 weeks old. “Nehemia is a sweet girl who loves meeting new people,” staff say. “We are not sure on the breed so we can’t tell you how big she will grow. She’ll most likely will be a medium size.

“She is full of beans and loves to chase toys. She is just a pup and still learning manners when it comes to meeting new dogs, so she’ll need a family who can help her with training and socialisation. She appears to have had some toilet training — she will keep her bedroom nice and clean — and can sit when asked.”

Remember our “chocolate bar pups” in Burnie? Some of them have moved to our Launceston Home.

Boys Waffle and Snickers, and their sister Violet are American Staffy-Mastiff-Rottweiler x pups born on February 18. They’re baby sized now but, considering their breeding, they have plenty of growing to do.

Like all puppies, positive training and socialisation experiences with people and other dogs at this early age will set them on a great path to becoming well-behaved and well-adjusted adults.

Puppy preschool helps knock both those goals out of the park, and is a great way to bond with your new family member too. These girls will also need gentle introductions to all the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures the world has to offer.
