Dogs available for adoption
Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania has been here for dogs for more than 70 years. We re-unite lost dogs with their families, find new homes for unwanted dogs, and provide care and medical treatment to all dogs in need. Our vision is that every dog in Tasmania has a safe and caring home.
Our dogs for adoption are currently available across our four Tasmanian dog shelters, in Hobart, Burnie, Launceston and Devonport, as well as dogs currently in foster care (off-site). Click on the dog profiles below to learn more each dog!
If you have any questions about any of our dogs, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our friendly team. We kindly ask that visitors make a booking to walk through the adoptions area to view dogs. Bookings can only be made on the day and for two days ahead.
Please be aware that dogs are being adopted throughout the day, and while we try and update the website as soon as a dog is adopted, we cannot guarantee that any particular dog will still be there when you visit. It can also take some time for a digital dog profile to be created, so you may find we have more dogs available for adoption on site than listed on this page.
Our adoption fees rarely come close to covering what it costs to give Tasmanian dogs in need the second chances they deserve. Food, shelter, care, flea treatment, microchips, desexing and vaccinations all add up. And that’s before we even factor in additional costs such as medicines, diagnostic tests, transport, dental work and lifesaving surgeries that many dogs require.
Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania is an Australian registered charity that receives no Government funding. For many of the dogs, the kindness and generosity of our dog loving community is what makes the difference between heartbreak and hope. Please donate today for the dogs that need us most.
Adoption guide
Step 1: Assess your lifestyle and what sort of dog will be most suitable. Consider the level of commitment required to care for a dog, ensuring both their physical and mental well-being.
Step 2: Explore the available dogs for adoption on our website. Read their profiles carefully to find a suitable match for your family and to determine if you can provide them with a loving forever home.
Step 3: Schedule an appointment to visit your closest Home. While visiting, please keep in mind that you will be viewing all dogs, as we cannot hold or guarantee the availability of any specific dog. If you plan to adopt on the day of your visit, ensure all household members, including existing dogs and small children, accompany you. Please notify us at the time of booking if you’re bringing additional pets or children, so we can allocate sufficient time. Our priority is to facilitate the perfect match between you and your new furry family member.

These dogs are not currently available to meet on site. If you are interested, please contact the Home directly to discuss their suitability and the possibility of arranging a meet and greet.
The paw-fect match
When you’re looking to adopt, we’ll ask a few questions to help us figure out if it’s the right match — for you and for the dog. This might include things like your experience with the breed, your home environment, lifestyle, and family situation.
Finding the right fit is incredibly important to us. Every dog deserves a home where they can thrive. If, for any reason, we feel it’s not quite the right match, our team reserves the right not to proceed with the adoption.
Step 4: Bring your new companion home! Review the information provided by our staff and refer to your adoption book to ensure a smooth transition for your newest family member. Remember the importance of the ‘3-3-3 Adoption Rule.’
Visit our homes
Each year, we care for approximately 3,000 lost, abandoned, and surrendered dogs through the operations of our four Homes across Tasmania: Launceston, Burnie, Devonport, and Hobart. Every dog rehomed is temperament tested, given a full health check, desexed, vaccinated, and microchipped before being offered for adoption.
See the locations of our four shelters below, and click the button to book your visit!

We NEVER turn away a dog in need and will do everything we can to ensure each dog receives the medical attention, love, support, and care they need before finding a new forever home. There is no time limit at our Homes, and we will care for each dog for as long as it takes to find them the right home.
We do not receive any Government funding and rely entirely on our services and the charity of our dog-loving community for support. Our fundraising efforts are vital to our survival.
