We help lost and unwanted dogs throughout Tasmania

Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania has been here for dogs for more than 70 years. We re-unite lost dogs with their families and find new homes for unwanted dogs. We are committed to zero euthanasia of healthy, temperamentally sound dogs.

Just think: if you adopt Lego, you can refer to your home as LEGOLAND.

Lego may look like a thylacine, but he’s actually a Greyhound who weighs 33.5kg and will be three years old in September. He has passed his unmuzzling assessment and has his orange collar to prove it. As far as training goes, we can see that he’s partial to a piece of cheese …

He spent some time in foster care and received a glowing report: “He is quiet and gentle, is very social with people and dogs, and loves a cuddle!” his carer says. “He loves the beach, and generally wants to spend all his time in someone's company whether it's for a snooze or out and about in the garden.”

“Lego would love his humans to be around him most of the time, otherwise he gets lonely,” our foster care guru says. “He is a leaner and will lean his whole body weight into you.”

🐾 Quiet nature …
🐾 And gentle too
🐾 Cuddle monster
🐾 Loves people …
🐾 And other dogs

Every dog is desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms, and has had a standard health check. Each dog has also been behaviourally assessed.

If you are interested in meeting Lego, please use the link below to submit an expression of interest. Please include as much detail as you can about the life you could provide for a new dog. Staff from our Hobart Home will contact those suitable to chat and arrange an appointment.

🐾 We can only accept EOIs under the correct dog's name. Please don't select another dog's name in the drop-down menu.
🐾 If you cannot see the dog's name in the list, it's because we have hit the maximum number of EOIs we are able to accept for that dog.
🐾 We may not be able to contact all unsuccessful applicants.
🐾 We appreciate you may want to increase your chances of being selected as a new fur parent, but contacting us to reiterate information in your application only takes us away from our doggie duties and does not increase your chances. Thank you for understanding.

Are you the type of person who likes to buy in bulk and get more bang for your buck? Tiger offers many more kilos than the average for his adoption price.

He’s a Mastiff x who is four years old and weighs a very impressive 55kg. We’re told he knows sit and “bed”, comes when called, and is mostly toilet trained.

Tiger needed eye surgery when he came into our care, and then spent some time in foster care recovering. “He has been a fantastic boy with us, and an absolute gem with all his vet checks and meds in his eye,” our foster care co-ordination guru said. Tiger is a people-focused dog who aims to please.

“For a 55kg boy, he is actually very gentle,” our foster carer said. “For a dog who I think has always been an outside dog, he only made one mistake inside on his first day. He’s gentle as a lamb to walk and will be a great addition to someone's family.” He’s even been going on evening strolls with a 10-year-old Beagle lady. Does that mean Tiger has a “cougar” girlfriend?

Buddy’s gorgeous coat literally gleams in the sunlight. Someone’s been getting his fish oil!

This handsome lad is a German Shorthaired Pointer-Smithfield x who weighs 24.5kg and will be a year old in September. He hasn’t had much in the way of training but we’re told he comes when called and is toilet trained.

He’s been spending some time in foster care where he’s happily interacted with another dog. He lived with a small dog in his past life. He’s also lived with children before and has been around them in foster care as well.

Buddy has been learning his training basics, but as with any dog will need ongoing training. He’s a mix of two energetic breeds and will require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. He’s not suitable for a home with cats or other small animals.

🐾 What a looker
🐾 Energetic mix
🐾 Young fellow
🐾 Needs training

Every dog is desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms, and has had a standard health check. Each dog has also been behaviourally assessed.

Handsome Alfie looks to be almost bursting with enthusiasm for life, with his bright eyes and frankly over-the-top ears.

Alfie is a Border Collie-Smithfield x who weighs 20kg and will be a year old in May. We’re told he knows sit, heel and walk, and is toilet trained.

Staff at our Hobart Home confirmed this, saying he is a “young, playful, happy boy” who will sit for treats. Ongoing training will be important at his age.

He hasn’t lived with children but has lived with other dogs, although he tends to want all the attention to himself so may do best as the sole dog in his new home. He hasn’t lived with any other pets. He will need ongoing socialisation with other dogs, and people too.

Alfie enjoys going for car rides and likes a splash under the garden sprinkler.
We’re told he loves to sleep near his humans at night. Aww, Alfie! As a mix of two brainy, working dog breeds, Alfie will need plenty of mental stimulation and exercise.

🐾 Playful youngster
🐾 Happy nature
🐾 Needs training
🐾 … and socialisation

Every dog is desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms, and has had a standard health check. Each dog has also been behaviourally assessed.

If you look closely, you’ll see Nova has the most delightful little black beard framing her bottom jaw. Don’t you just want to tickle those whiskers?

She’s a Smithfield-Staghound x who is almost four months old and weighs a little under 13kg, with plenty of growing to do. We are told she knows sit and is toilet trained, and sometimes comes when called.

At her age obedience training is a work in progress that should be ongoing. She will also need socialisation with people and other dogs, and gentle introductions to the wider world.

Nova can be a little over-the-top at playtime so isn’t suited for a home with young children until she learns some manners. She has lived with another dog, and cats and chickens she enjoyed chasing. She’s not suited for a home with small animals or livestock.

🐾 Wonderful whiskers!
🐾 Some training …
🐾 But needs more …
🐾 And socialisation

Every dog is desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms, and has had a standard health check. Each dog has also been behaviourally assessed.

If you are interested in meeting Nova, please use the link below to submit an expression of interest. Please include as much detail as you can about the life you could provide for a new dog. Staff from our Hobart Home will contact those suitable to chat and arrange an appointment.

Malibu is such an appealing girl with her gorgeous white patches speckled with red freckles.

She's a Staffy x who weighs 30kg and will be two years old on Remembrance Day. She hasn’t had much in the way of training but we are told she knows sit, comes when called and is toilet trained.

“She is sweet-natured dog who is playful and energetic,” staff at our Hobart Home say. She likes playing with water and also enjoys getting a squirt from a garden hose.

She lived with another dog in the past that she was friendly with — she particularly enjoys playing chasings — so she might like a canine companion in her new home. She hasn’t lived with children.

🐾 Gorgeous girl
🐾 Little training
🐾 Loves water play
🐾 Sweet nature
🐾 Lots of energy

Boston with his stuffed toy

Boston’s love story — more than a feeling

“I just love him so much. Boston is my life.”

Thirteen years ago, Boston embarked on his new life with Sarah after being adopted from our Hobart Home. He had been found as a stray, wandering the streets of Claremont.

Now 16 years old, Boston might be undergoing hydrotherapy for his old bones, stairs have been replaced by ramps, and his favourite beds have been pimped with orthotic beds underneath, but as far as he’s concerned, life is still very grand indeed.

Bobo back with his mum and breeder, Amy

Bobo finds his fairytale ending

Senior dog Bobo went from Slumdog to Millionaire in the love stakes when a very special person from his past discovered he was at our Hobart Home. An eight-year-old Great Dane-Mastiff x, Bobo spent four months with us, dividing his time between our Hobart Home and foster care before being adopted in mid-February.
Bobo’s foster carer gave Hobart big boy Bobo a glowing report. “He is just the gentlest giant around the house. I call him Bobo the Clown … because he is!”

Tassie, take a bow-wow-wow

Thank you overwhelming generosity of the Tasmanian dog-loving public who gave generously to our recent Dogs’ Homes annual Christmas Appeal. We are incredibly grateful for every single cent that was donated, especially in light of the ongoing cost of living crisis that has us all tightening our belts. When you donate, you’re not just supporting a shelter; you’re saving lives and giving beautiful dogs a second chance when they need it most.

Elliot when he first arrived at the Dogs' Homes

Elliott goes from ragged and bedraggled to home and hosed

Elliott came to us in a poor condition after being found wandering the street. He was very underweight, smelled bad, and his right eye was painfully infected.

But this didn’t break this brave little man’s indomitable spirit, or even dent his capacity to show affection to the strange new humans he found himself with. Now it was time for our dedicated veterinary team to get to work.

Sam gets a life change and a new name

In June 2023, Dwayne arrived at the Dogs’ Homes, seeking care and a second chance. Before being placed up for adoption, he underwent a comprehensive health check, including de-sexing, vaccinations, and flea/worm/tick treatment. Additionally, he received treatment for an ear infection, a small wound, and diarrhea. Fortunately, Dwayne found his much-needed second chance.

Take your dog on a Sniffari!

A Sniffari is a ‘sniffing safari’ for your dog. Our Sniffari is a bushland walk located within the expansive land behind our Hobart Home.

Along the walk are ‘sniff stations’ filled with exciting sniffy items for your dog to enjoy. A dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 times greater than ours. It is through their amazing noses that they see the world. So, I guess you could say this is a cinematic experience for them!

Every dollar raised from Sniffaries goes directly to helping our dogs.
